It’s amazing what you can find in one clip.
In this single play we see a Linebacker use great block shedding technique, take a good angle, and finish with a solid tackle.
Let’s get into it.
Shed
There are many different ways to shed a block.
In this clip we see the Linebacker use what I call a “Bully” or “Shock” technique.
This involves using the hands to create separation from the blocker.
In a perfect world, you would finish a Bully technique by using a Rip or Arm Over with the backside arm. This helps you fully clear the block, even if your opponent is holding you.
Angle
I don’t think you can spend enough time on Defence working on angles.
Here we see the Linebacker take a great Back Hip Angle on the ball carrier.
This play happens in tight quarters, but even if it’s only for a couple of steps, your angle of approach is critical.
With this type of angle, the Linebacker sets himself up for the tackle, and the Running Back has no chance to cut back on the play.
Tackle
This is all great, but shedding a block and taking the proper angle doesn’t mean much if you can’t finish the tackle.
There are two things I really like about this tackle.
First, the Linebacker keeps his head out of contact. He does this by keeping his head on the near side of the ball carrier. He also keeps his eyes up.
Second, the Linebacker runs his feet through the tackle.
Drills
I break down some drills you can use to develop every one of these skills — and many more —in the Linebacker Drills Super Clinic.
