Three Questions To Ask When Creating A New Blitz
From napkin to playbook
If you’re like me, you have ideas for Blitzes scribbled everywhere.
Notebooks, scrap sheets of paper, napkins.
But before you mold any of those ideas into a fully formed Blitz, ask yourself these three questions:

What’s The Concept?
There needs to be a reason you’re adding a Blitz to the playbook.
You should be able to describe the concept of the Blitz in a simple sentence.
We’re putting in a Boundary Edge Pressure.
We’re sending five with a Stunt.
It’s an overload.
Summarize the Blitz into a concept so you can decide whether or not you need to create it.
Don’t add a Blitz just for fun. Be deliberate as to why you’re putting it in.
Fill a need in your playbook.
What’s the Coverage?
When putting in a new Blitz, you’re likely going to use an existing Coverage.
But there might be a tweak to it, or a different player executing a certain assignment.
Figure out exactly how you want the Coverage to look behind the Blitz.
Make sure the front end matches the back end.
What Does It Stress?
What are you trying to accomplish with your Blitz Path?
Are you attacking a certain type of pass protection?
Are you trying to blow up a certain type of run?
Make sure you — and your players — understand the goal.
Of course you want to be sound against everything.
(When calling a Run Blitz you might get a Pass.)
But at least you’ll have a plan.
Final Thoughts
Ask these three questions any time you’re thinking about creating a new Blitz.
If you like the answers, then you can start putting things together.
