I sat down recently to reflect on this newsletter.
Why do I write this?
I started jotting things down.
My first thought:
I write this newsletter to help coaches, including myself, win games.
That has to be it, doesn’t it? I mean, that’s what we’re trying to do here. We all want to win games. And learning more about techniques and schemes should help us do that, right?
But after a little more thought, I flipped it completely.
That’s not what’s going on here. This is not about winning games.
So I revised:
I write this newsletter to help coaches, including myself, become better coaches.
That’s it.
That’s why these newsletters end up littered with more questions than answers.
It’s all about getting the juices flowing. Introducing topics and then sharing a few thoughts so we can all to come up with our own answers.
Because if we can spend a little time thinking about a topic before our players ask the question, we’ll be in better shape to guide them along.
Three Pillars
I was happy with this definition of the newsletter. It provided clarity.
I think this is also why I don’t mind branching off from time to time to discuss coaching in general.
I read the Phil Jackson autobiography a while ago.
There was one small section in there that caused me to stop in my tracks.
This was years ago, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.
In this section he talks about three pillars:
Simplicity. Patience. Compassion.
The more I can improve in those areas, the closer I’ll get to becoming the type of coach I want to be.
This newsletter is about that too.
Quick Ask:
I’ll end here with a quick ask:
